Liz Vels

 

Liz was born in 1937 in Pietermaritzburg and first became a nurse and then studied teaching. It was only later that she came to art, studying at the Johannesburg College of Art and lecturing in Painting and Art history.

​She later did a papermaking workshop in the U.K which resulted in a deep interest in this field and led her on to become a part-time trainer for both Khoibos Papermakers in the Tsitsikamma and  Onankali Papermaking Project in Namibia. Liz also studied bookbinding with Peter Carstens.

​She obtained a distinction with her Masters Diploma dissertation ‘Logos as Artifact’ from Wits Technikon and is a full-time artist.

​She has worked in many collections including the Iziko National Gallery Cape Town, Pretoria Art Museum, Johannesburg Art Gallery, Durban Art gallery and many Corporate collections, nationally.

​Liz has exhibited widely, both at a national level and internationally, also producing many artists books for Africa Nova, Centre for the Book and Cape Town Triennial at the SA National gallery amongst others.
